Origin Capital Fund I was New Zealand’s first private capital fund dedicated to investing exclusively in the kiwifruit sector — providing a new option for wholesale investors seeking exposure to one of New Zealand's most succesful primary industries. The Fund invests exclusively in premium Zespri™ SunGold™ Kiwifruit orchards, alongside strategic holdings in Zespri shares, providing direct exposure to the sector’s highest-performing assets.

 

A total of $85m was raised from 160 investors seeking access to this tightly held and high-growth industry. The Fund is now fully deployed, with a diversified portfolio of nine orchards spanning 102 canopy hectares across the Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, and Kerikeri. Today, the portfolio is valued at approximately NZD170 million, and the Fund ranks among the top 10 shareholders in Zespri.

 

Performance has been equally compelling, with total fund returns of 14% in the 2024/25 financial year and 29% in the 2025/26 financial year (year ending 28 February), reflecting both the strength of the underlying sector and the Fund’s disciplined investment approach.

The Fund has benefited from holding a diverse portfolio, having been affected by Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023. This was a significant event for the Fund, however the recovery of affected assets has been remarkable, a reflection of the strength of the industry and the quality of partners available to the Origin team.
